U.S. SAVINGS BONDS: MANDATORY ISSUE OF BONDS IN SAFEKEEPING
The U.S. Treasury Department, as part of their efforts to convert to paperless all-electronic records, is phasing out paper U.S. Savings Bonds.
This means your bonds currently held by DFAS in safekeeping must be printed and mailed to you no later than September 2014.
Beginning in April 2014, DFAS will be working with the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis to begin printing and mailing bonds we currently hold for service members. As the bonds are printed, each is assigned a serial number. The bonds will then be sent to your mailing address on record.
Until March 31, 2014, you can request your U.S. Savings Bonds currently held by DFAS. Your request must include your name, a valid mailing address (where the printed bonds will be sent), a daytime phone number, your signature and date. Your request should state that you want your bonds "released from safekeeping." Information on where to send your request is listed below.
NOTICE: Your Social Security Number is
no longer required when requesting return of your U.S. Savings Bonds current in safekeeping with DFAS.
After March, the printing and mailing process will be conducted in stages based on military service and bond denomination. Of course, you can request your bonds at any time before this process begins. Instructions based on your service are provided below.
