Former Defense Department civilian employee debts

How debts occur

DFAS collects debts incurred by federal employees that were not collected before they left federal service. Even individuals who were paid improperly are required to reimburse the Defense Department.

The following are examples of reasons people obtain debts:
  • Collections of unearned advance per diem and mileage allowance and unearned temporary quarters subsistence expense.
  • Collection of advances annual and sick leave
  • Overpayment of travel allowance and excess cost due to shipment of personal property
  • Collection of reports and survey (also known as government property loss of damage) debts
  • Unofficial telephone uses
  • Collection of overpaid civilian base pay

If you have already paid your debt

If you have already paid your debt

If your civilian pay office does not receive full payment, the debt is eventually transferred to us for collection of the outstanding amount. Occasionally, we experience a delay in receiving proper documentation. If you previously paid the same debt, please forward a copy of your receipt or a copy of the front and back of the negotiated check for further research.
