Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act
The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) generally provides the public a right, enforceable in court, to obtain access to federal agency records. Federal agencies are required to disclose any information requested under the FOIA unless such records (or portions thereof) are protected from public disclosure by certain exemptions and law enforcement exclusions, which protect personal privacy, national security and law enforcement. The Privacy Act of 1974 provides that no agency shall disclose any record, which is contained in a system of records by any means of communication to any person, or to another agency, except pursuant to a written request by, or prior written consent of, the individual to whom the record pertains, unless disclosure is pursuant to 12 Statutory Exceptions.
The FOIA/PA Office is not a repository for documents maintained or released by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS). Requests received in this office will be forwarded to the functional area that has the responsibility for the subject matter requested.
DFAS was established in 1991. Therefore, we do not have any records for individuals who were federal civilian employees prior to our existence. Please direct your request to the National Archives and Records Adminstration.
FOIA/PA laws do not require DFAS to do research for you, analyze data, answer written questions, complete affidavits or create records in response to a request.

You cannot use another agency's request/release/claim form to obtain DFAS records
DFAS DOES NOT maintain military personnel or medical/health records. Please see instructions for requesting personnel records.
The FOIA/PA Office DOES NOT process:
- Employment, housing, or mortgage worksheets/questionnaires
- Wage verifications:
- Military members
- DFAS Civilian Employees – You must request that the employee send you official verification via our MyBiz system
- Other Federal Civilian employees -- please contact the employee's agency Human Resource Office
- If member is retired, please contact Retired Pay at 1-888-332-7411
- If member is not retired, DFAS can provide Leave and Earnings statements; however, we require the member's signed consent.
