Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act
Welcome to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) Freedom of Information and Privacy Act Office homepage. This office manages the policies, programs, and procedural guidance to ensure compliance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Privacy Act (PA) of 1974.
FOIA applies only to federal agencies. The Act does not create a right of access to records held by Congress, the courts, state and local government agencies, private businesses or individuals.
Primary functions of the FOIA/PA office
- Provide documents, within established laws/guidelines, that are equities of [originated at] DFAS.
- Process appeals received in rebuttal to full or partial denial determinations.
The FOIA/PA Office is not a repository for documents maintained or released by DFAS. Requests received in this office are forwarded to the functional area that has the responsibility for the subject matter requested.
FOIA/PA laws do not require agencies to conduct research, analyze data, answer questions, complete affidavits or create records in response to a request.
