Shirley Reed, Deputy Director, DFAS Columbus

Ms. Shirley L. Reed is a Senior Executive Service member in the Department of Defense serving as Deputy Director for the Defense Finance and Accounting Service Columbus site.  As deputy director, she assists in managing the day-to-day operations of 2,100 accounting and finance professionals in support of the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, 10 Defense Agencies, in addition to overseeing operations for the DFAS Limestone site.

Prior to her current position, Ms. Reed served as Chief Information Officer for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Financial Management and Comptroller, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.  As CIO, she was responsible for the oversight of IT audit readiness activities while assisting with the development of strategies, policies and corrective action plans to mitigate audit findings.

Before entering the Senior Executive Service in 2015, Ms. Reed was Director for the Defense Enterprise Accounting and Management System (DEAMS) within the office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Operations.  Using her keen leadership skills, she successfully oversaw the functional design, development, test and deployment of DEAMS across the Air Force.

Ms. Reed entered federal service in 1985 as a data control clerk at McClellan AFB, CA.  Throughout her more than 30 years of federal service, Ms. Reed has held a variety of leadership roles in financial management positions with both DFAS and Air Force.

Throughout her career, she has earned many awards to include the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller) Financial Management Individual Achievement Award for her efforts on improving Financial Management Internal Controls.

Ms. Reed holds a Master of Science in Administration (MSA) in Acquisitions Administration from Central Michigan University, and completed the DoD wide APEX Executive Development training.  Ms. Reed is also a member of the American Society of Military Comptrollers.
