MICHELE A. GOMEZ, DIRECTOR FOR STANDARDS (ACCOUNTING)
Mrs. Michele A. Gomez is the Director for Standards (Accounting). She was selected in March 2013 and is responsible for developing finance and accounting goals and standards, analyzing operational results, and enabling DFAS to provide world class service to its customers.
Prior to this assignment, Mrs. Gomez served as the Chief of Staff to the director, DFAS Strategy and Support. As the directorate’s senior principal advisor, she provided insight and leadership in developing the agency’s business strategy through innovation, technology and employing best business practices. Her focus spanned all areas of DFAS strategic development including human capital, audit readiness, personnel and financial management. She also had oversight of the $518.8 million Strategy and Support operating budget.
From June 2011 to October 2012, she served as director of Information and Technology Accounting Services, leading more than 270 computer specialists supporting 43 accounting and commercial pay systems utilized by the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Defense Agencies. Her work to increase and improve system documentation and testing has proven critical to DFAS audit readiness.
Mrs. Gomez served as the director of Financial Management from June 2009 to June 2011 where she was responsible for providing a comprehensive financial management program for the DFAS Agency in support of their $1.6B program. She served as the Agency’s financial advisor providing support on resource management issues; planning; programming; budget policy, formulation, and execution; corporate reporting; financial analysis; work year and labor dollar budgeting and oversight; cost allocation, revenue, unit cost and work count management; and depreciation management.
As the director of Accounting Operations with DFAS Indianapolis from January 2006 to June 2009, Mrs. Gomez was responsible for providing accounting and payment services to the Army and 26 Defense Agencies. She and her more than 1,150 employees supported 11 major Army commands and 312 Army installations world-wide with management and allocation of more than $93.7 billion. As a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission, she led the effort to expand operations as work, including Foreign Military Sales, Air Force Military Pay Accounting and Debt Management, from seven closing sites was transferred to DFAS Indianapolis. From May 2003 to January 2006, she was assigned as director of Network Operations for DFAS Indianapolis, providing field-level accounting services for major Army commands with $15 billion annual funding.
In January 1991, Mrs. Gomez became an original member of DFAS when the agency was created and incorporated the mission and organization of the Defense Accounting Office. From that time through 2005, she has held a variety of positions with ever increasing accountability and leadership responsibilities. Her assignments have provided her a broad depth of experiences in accounting, finance, disbursing, project management and organizational skills.
Mrs. Gomez was inducted into the Senior Executive Service in March 2013. She was named the 2006 Federal Professional Employee of the Year in Indiana and has received the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller) Financial Management Award, two DFAS Indianapolis Director’s Awards, and the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service Medal.
Mrs. Gomez earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Northern Iowa and a master’s in Executive Development for Public Service from Ball State University. She is a 2012 graduate of the Senior Executive Fellows program at the Harvard Kennedy School. She is a certified public accountant and a Certified Government Financial Manager.
