Gregory L. Schmalfeldt, Director, DFAS Indianapolis Center

Gregory L. Schmalfeldt is the Director of the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) Indianapolis Center, responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of the federal government’s third largest building and more than 3,600 federal employees providing a range of finance and accounting services to the U.S.  Army, U.S. Air Force and 26 Defense Agencies worldwide.

Before assuming this position in 2014, he served as the Deputy Director of the DFAS Indianapolis Center.  Previously, he served as the Director for Standards within the DFAS Operations Directorate, responsible for developing finance and accounting goals and standards, analyzing operational results, and enabling DFAS to provide world class service to its customers. 

Prior to this assignment, he was the Director of Network Compliance. In that position, he was responsible for oversight of DFAS operations' audit compliance, Overseas Contingency Operations (formerly Global War on Terror) financial audits, Federal Managers' Financial Integrity Act, Enterprise Risk Management and operational review missions.

Mr. Schmalfeldt has worked for the Department of Defense in accounting for more than 30 years. He managed financial accounting over DoD-wide financial statement compilations, audit assertions and audited financial statements, budgetary, expenditure and Treasury reporting. He led problem disbursement initiatives to reduce balances and build sustainable process solutions for Army and Defense Agency customers. Mr. Schmalfeldt also led initiatives to implement the Defense Departmental Reporting System - Budgetary and improve military pay accounting for the Army. He has supported strategic initiatives to obtain auditable financial statements and is recognized as a leader in financial accounting within the Department. 

Mr. Schmalfeldt is a past President of the Indianapolis Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants. He has also served on the Finance Center Federal Credit Union Board of Directors and held numerous executive level leadership positions on the Board. Mr. Schmalfeldt has a bachelor's degree in Accounting from Indiana Central University, Indianapolis, and is a Certified Public Accountant. He was the first manager to be recognized by the DFAS Indianapolis Center as their representative for the Federal Employee of the Year "Professional Category" and has received numerous awards and recognition for his achievements in accounting and financial management.
