How to Report a Retiree's Death
The survey found that loved ones of retirees with Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) coverage didn’t understand they needed to send paperwork for both the retiree’s last pay AND the SBP annuity. We addressed the concern by
adding more information
to our “
Report a Retiree's Death
” webpage and
creating a downloadable
PDF checklist
outlining what family members needs to know and do when a retiree dies.
Self Service and Tool Improvements
askDFAS Experience Improved
Using customer feedback, Retired & Annuitant Pay recently set out on a mission to make our askDFAS online tools experience more intuitive and helpful. For both retirees and SBP annuitants, there are now many new online tools and the
tools are organized into clearer categories
. There are even
new options to ask account questions online
via askDFAS!

Tax Documents Overseas
Some retirees and annuitants had difficulty getting replacement tax documents because our online request forms wouldn’t accept a foreign address. Now,
our
1099-R reissue online tool
and our notification of death online forms both
accept foreign addresses.
Quick Tools
We created a new
Quick Tools webpage
, which offers organized links to our most-requested tools. This is part of our initiative to create more wayfinding webpages so you can
quickly and easily find what the information you need
on our website.
Process Improvements
SBP Annuitant Verification Simplified
When SBP annuitants were confused about how and when they needed to provide their annual eligibility verification, we
overhauled the verification process
for annuitants. The biggest change was streamlining the SBP requirements, which were the most burdensome.
Now, no annuitant is required to provide more than one annual verification
.
