All Other Applicants

Not currently a federal employee, in school, a recent graduate, a military veteran or a person with disabilities?  No worries, there are other paths to a job with DFAS depending on where your life journey has taken you.  DFAS has opportunities for U.S. Citizens who have no federal work experience, those who have worked for the federal government in the past, and for certain spouses and family members of military or civilian employees.

How to apply

Every vacancy announcement specifies the individuals from whom we will accept applications under “Who May Apply.” Some vacancies are open only to current DFAS employees, others are open to applicants who have some type of status or eligibility to apply, and others are open to “all U.S. Citizens.”  When a vacancy is open to “all U.S. Citizens” it means anyone may apply.

No Prior Federal Employment

If you have never worked for the Federal government you are eligible to apply on vacancy announcements that are open to “United States Citizens.”   On the usajobs.gov website select the radio button next to U.S. Citizens under “Who May Apply.”  This will limit your list of positions to those that are open to U.S. citizens.  This will make your job search easier.

Former Permanent Federal Employees

If you previously held a career or career-conditional appointment with the federal government, you may be eligible for reinstatement.  If you are eligible for reinstatement you can apply for Federal jobs open only to “current or former permanent Federal employees.”  There is no time limit on reinstatement eligibility for those who either have veterans' preference, or acquired career tenure by completing 3 years of substantially continuous creditable service. You must meet specific criteria to be eligible for appointment using this authority.  If you are eligible for this status be sure to select the radio button next to Federal Employees under “Who May Apply” to see positions that are open to those who have a status or eligibility to apply.

Military Spouses

If you are the spouse of an active duty military member you may be eligible to apply under the Military Spouse Appointing Authority if your spouse 1) receives a permanent change of station (PCS) move; 2) has a 100% disability rating; or 3) died while on active duty.  More information may be found here. Family Members of Overseas Employee

If you are the spouse or family member who resides with a member of the U.S. Armed Forces or a U.S. citizen civilian employee of a U.S. Government Agency, whose duty station is in a foreign area you may be eligible for one of the overseas appointing authorities.  If you are eligible for one of these appointment authorities you may apply on any vacancy announcement open to “other individuals eligible under special appointment authorities.”  To see these positions be sure to select the radio button next to Federal Employees under Who May Apply to see positions that are open to those who have a status or eligibility to apply.

When your spouse or family member returns to a position in the States, if you have completed 52 weeks of service in an appropriated fund position overseas, you are eligible for the Former Overseas Employment as a Family Member appointing authority.  Under this authority you are eligible for appointment in the competitive service for a period of three years following the date of your return to the United States from the overseas area.  If you are eligible for this appointment authority you may apply on any vacancy announcement open to “other individuals eligible under special appointment authorities.” To see these positions be sure to select the radio button next to Federal Employees under Who May Apply to see positions that are open to those who have a status or eligibility to apply.
