Tax Season Survival
Guide
With tax
deadlines approaching, retirees should have their 2006 information and forms
ready to go.
Retired Pay
Account Statements (RAS) and 1099Rs are posted to myPay for quick and
easy access. For retirees who do not have a myPay account or
have requested hardcopy documents, these forms were mailed on schedule in
December.
For
retirees who have not received their end-of-year statements and tax forms,
several options exist to request DFAS reissue them.
The fastest
and most secure delivery requires a Personal Identification Number (PIN) and a
personal computer. All statements and forms are available for printing via the myPay system.
If a
retiree has a PIN but does not have access to a personal computer, he or she can
request a 1099R or RAS reissue by calling the Customer Service
Center at 800-321-1080
and utilizing the Interactive Voice Response System. This system is available 24 hours a day,
seven days a week and allows callers to request reissue of statements without
talking directly to a Customer Service Representative.
If retirees
prefer to talk with a Customer Service Representative at 800-321-1080, they
should understand that tax season is the busiest time of the year for the Customer Service Center
as they are assisting customers with a myriad of issues in addition to tax
questions. The busiest days of the week
are Monday and Tuesday. The best times
to call are Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m. EST or from
2:00 to 7:30 p.m. EST
Reissue
requests may also be made in writing. Retirees can send a request
electronically via a Retired Pay Customer Inquiry Request available at https://ca.dtic.mil/dfas/s-retired/ret-pay.htm. Postal correspondence should be mailed to Defense
Finance & Accounting Service, U.S. Military Retired Pay, P.O. Box 7130,
London, KY 40742-7130.
All
requests should include the retiree’s name, Social Security Number, current
address, current phone number, and a brief description of what documents are
being requested. Allow 30 days for
processing.
