Security Concerns and myPay
Advantages:
“Phishing” is a scam using official-looking e-mail in an
attempt to lure unwary recipients into disclosing personal and financial information.
Often, these messages have the logos, language and overall appearance of a
message from a financial institution, government agency or other legitimate
source. Unfortunately, people of all ages and incomes have been duped into
revealing information that allowed criminals to raid their accounts and steal
their identities.
Recently,
DFAS has received a number of messages from myPay users about the
validity of e-mail messages sent from SmartDocs@dfas.mil, myPay’s electronic notification component, and
the overall security afforded by any of the agency’s online systems.
Secure SmartDocs e-mail messages are sent to confirm changes
to a myPay user’s account or to provide important news from
DFAS. These messages will never ask
the recipient to respond with personal or financial information. A myPay
user who receives a suspicious e-mail can check its validity by calling the
customer service center at 1-800-390-2348.
DFAS is
committed to protecting the information and privacy of its customers. In addition
to using the latest and best encryption security for online transactions, the
agency also incorporates the following directives in all of its operational
practices:
- DFAS does not sell customer
information.
- DFAS does not share personal
information with persons, companies, or organizations outside of
DFAS. Information sharing with
other government agencies (for example, Department of Veterans Affairs) is
limited to the extent required to properly maintain accounts, or as
legally required.
- DFAS requires persons or
organizations that provide services on the agency’s behalf to keep
personal information confidential. Those persons or organizations are
further required to use personal information only in providing the
services they are contracted to perform.
- DFAS employees are continually
reminded about the need to protect personal information. Safeguards (physical, electronic and
procedural) are established and updated to protect this information. Even
DFAS customer service centers and the online electronic information
request forms require account holders to verify their identity before
conducting any official business.
Data
security and privacy are always a concern for DFAS, and myPay is
no exception. Current and future myPay
account holders can be assured that DFAS is committed to providing access
to information using the latest in online security. myPay
meets or exceeds industry security requirements worldwide to protect user’s
privacy. In fact, identity theft
protection is greater for myPay users than those who rely
on regular mail delivery for financial transactions. That’s why almost 3.5
million DFAS customers, from active duty military, National Guard to retirees
and annuitants, currently use myPay.
Current
users are asked to encourage friends and fellow retirees to sign up for myPay,
so they can experience the convenience in obtaining payroll information,
as well as subscribe to the Retired Pay Newsletter to receive timely and
updated information monthly.
