Salary structures are based on grade, GS level, length of time in grade, and location. The entry level for the Leaders in Motion program is usually GS-7 on the Federal pay scale, with promotion potential to the GS-9 and GS-11 levels. Candidates with a master’s degree can be appointed at the GS-9 level.

In addition to a competitive salary structure with promotion potential, we offer excellent benefits to all of our employees.

Certifications – We encourage all professionals to obtain certifications. We will pay for certification training and reimburse you for passed tests. We also reimburse you for your licensing and renewal fees.

Vacation time – You will start earning 4 hours per pay period (every two weeks) – which is 13 days - from the day you begin working at DFAS. Once you’ve completed 3 years, you will earn 6 hours per pay period – which is 19.5 days per year! Once you’ve completed 15 years, you will earn 8 hours per pay period –26 days per year!

Federal holidays – We have 10 paid Federal holidays.

Paid sick days – We will pay you when you’re sick or need to go to a medical appointment – up to 4 hours per pay period. You can carry unused sick days forward each year.

Flexible work schedules – We have flextime. Hours may vary by site. You are required to work 40 hours per week. You will work with your supervisor in determining your work schedule. At several sites, you may begin work as early as 6 a.m., work your 8 hours plus 30 minutes for lunch, and then go home once you’ve completed your work day. Every day could potentially be different. You can also take a longer lunch period – as long as you work 8 hours each day.

Balance of Personal Life and Work – We value a balanced work life. Once you’ve completed your 8 hour work day, we encourage you to go home and spend time doing the things in life that you enjoy. If you do work late, we will pay you for your time.

Travel opportunities – If you love to travel, there will be many opportunities over your career to travel. Travel could be to one of the other DFAS sites, to visit one of our customers, or to attend a conference. If you don’t want to travel, we have those jobs as well. You help determine by choosing your career path the amount of required travel.

Our dedication to this goal is reflected in our vision statements, which is to be the employer of choice, providing a progressive and professional work environment for our employees.

  • Leaders in Motion program – Our premier full-time entry level training program. This is a three-year structured program which consists of four six-month rotational assignments, classroom instruction, special projects, monthly meetings with senior managers and leaders, and an annual leadership development conference.
  • Developmental assignments – Once you’ve completed the Leaders in Motion program, you can pursue a developmental assignment which provides work experience in a different occupational series or function. This is accomplished through cross-training, periodic details, and/or reassignments that allow for career transitions.
  • Growth and Learning program - The DFAS Growth & Learning Program is a comprehensive program which includes both traditional and non-traditional learning including on-site classroom training; distance and e-learning; and tuition assistance.

Retirement Plan - Recognizing the importance of your future, the Federal Government offers a retirement program that helps provide financial security for you and your family. You are a participant in the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). This is one of the most important benefits you receive as a Federal employee. FERS is a retirement system that is responsive to the changing times and Federal work force needs. Many of its features are "portable," so that if you leave Federal employment, you may still qualify for the benefits. FERS is flexible; you will be able to choose what is best for your individual situation. And FERS enables you to take an active role in securing your future. Part of your Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) benefit is the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). The TSP is a tax-deferred retirement savings and investment plan that offers you the same type of savings and tax benefits that many private corporations offer their employees under 401(k) plans. By participating in the TSP, you have the opportunity to save part of your income for retirement, receive matching agency contributions, and reduce your current taxes. Your thrift account is the part of your retirement that you control you decide how much of your pay to put in your thrift account, how to invest it, and, when you retire, you decide how you want your money paid out.

Health and life insurance – We offer several group health insurance plans and Federal Employees Group Life Insurance.

Physical health and wellness programs – Some of our sites have onsite gyms or arrangements with local health clubs for reduced memberships. We also have an Employee Assistance Program counselor available for our employees. In addition, many of our sites conduct wellness programs throughout the year.
