Our internships vary from site to site. Some of the sites host interns year round while others host a summer intern program. Contact the “Recruiter contact information” to learn the details about the DFAS site in which you are interested. Our internships are our primary recruiting strategy for hiring full-time entry-level associates for our Leaders in Motion program.

If you are part of a summer intern program, you will enjoy a memorable summer! You will be assigned to a seasoned DFAS accountant or financial analyst for the summer who will teach you a DFAS process to help you gain real-world, hands-on experience. In many cases, you will be able to improve the process and save our customers some money!

You will also be assigned a group project. You will be paired with one or two other interns and be given a group project that you will be required to research, perform analysis, build PowerPoint presentations, and then provide your recommendations to senior managers. Our goal is to have you work on a project that will help us improve DFAS in some capacity. Last year, one group was asked to review how the Columbus site purchased copy paper. After learning the process, the group developed a streamline process, which DFAS Columbus implemented. The new process allowed DFAS to save approximately $20,000 per year!

You will be given a wide variety of assignments during the summer. You will learn about how DFAS uses the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) as a management measurement tool. In fact, Harvard Business Review is publishing an article on how DFAS uses the BSC! You will also be asked to take some on-line classes and provide a written critique of the classes.

You will receive numerous briefings from many of our senior managers and leaders so that by the end of the summer, you will have a good idea about the major processes performed at DFAS and you will know most of our senior leadership.
