NEW!! High Deductible Health Plans (HDHP) with Health Savings Accounts (HSA)

Medical Insignia signifying Health Benefits

As a DFAS employee, you are eligible to elect a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) and establish pre-tax allotments to a Health Savings Accounts (HSA). A HDHP with a HSA or a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) provides traditional medical coverage and a tax free way to help you build savings for future medical expenses. The HDHP/HSA or HRA gives you greater flexibility and discretion over how you use your health care benefits.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAFEDS)

Flexible Spending Accounts enable eligible employees to pay for certain medical and dependent care expenses with pre-tax dollars.

Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance

The Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) program is designed to help protect you and eligible family members from the expenses of illness and accidents. Unlike many private sector health benefit plans, it provides coverage without physical examination, places no restrictions on age or physical condition, and offers a wide range of plans to choose from. Some plans include dental and vision coverage. If dental or vision are not part of the plan you select, you can enroll in separate dental and/or vision insurance plan.

You and DFAS share the cost of health insurance premiums. On average, for full time employees, the government pays approximately 70 percent of the premium. In addition, your premiums may be deducted before taxes. For more information on health benefits, check out OPM's FEHB web site .

The Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP) is available to eligible Federal employees, retirees, and their eligible family members on an enrollee-pay-all basis. This Program allows dental and vision insurance to be purchased on a group basis which means competitive premiums and no pre-existing condition limitations. Premiums for enrolled Federal employees are also withheld from your salary on a pre-tax basis.

Life Insurance

The Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) program provides group term life insurance. In most cases, basic life insurance coverage is effective on the first day you enter on duty. Basic coverage is equal to the greater of (a) your annual basic pay rounded up to the next $1,000 plus $2,000, or (b) $10,000. You may waive Basic coverage at any time. In addition to the Basic coverage, there are 3 forms of Optional insurance that you can elect:

  • Standard: You may select additional life insurance coverage of $10,000 or a higher amount if your rate of annual basic pay exceeds that of the maximum amount of Basic Insurance. This includes additional accidental death and dismemberment coverage up to the face amount of your coverage.
  • Additional: You can choose additional life insurance coverage equal to 1,2,3,4, or 5 times your actual rate of annual basic pay, rounded up to the next highest thousand.
  • Family: You may elect to provide coverage for your spouse and eligible dependent children. You may elect 1,2,3,4, or 5 multiples of coverage. Each multiple is equal to $5,000 for your spouse and $2,500 for each of your eligible dependent children.

Federal Long Term Care Insurance

The Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program provides an important benefit that can help pay long term care expenses you may incur in the future. It offers comprehensive insurance that makes payments toward long term care that people may need because they are unable to care for themselves including nursing home care, assisted living facility care, formal and informal care in your home, hospice care, respite care, and others. This program is open to Federal employees, Federal retirees, survivor annuitants, individuals receiving compensation from the Department of Labor, retirees of the uniformed services, retired military reservists, spouses of employees and annuitants, adult children of employees and annuitants, and parents, parents-in-law, and stepparents of employees.

Sick Leave

Full-time employees earn 4 hours of sick leave every pay period, or 104 hours a year. There is no limit on the amount of sick leave you can accumulate during your Federal career. Your sick leave is paid at the same rate as salary. The Federal government's generous sick leave program provides a greater benefit than most private sector companies' short-term disability programs because Federal employees receive 100% of their pay when they use their sick leave and there is no limit to how much sick leave you can accrue.

Leave and Work Scheduling Flexibilities Available for Childbirth and/or Adoption

The Federal Government offers numerous leave and work scheduling flexibilities to assist employees in meeting their work and family obligations. The administration of these flexibilities typically is addressed in DFAS internal policies and/or collective bargaining agreements.

Family Friendly Leave Act

As a full-time employee, you may use up to 104 hours of your sick leave each year for family care and bereavement purposes. Part-time employees and employees with uncommon tours of duty are also covered; the amount of sick leave they may use for these purposes is pro rated. You may use Family Friendly sick leave: to provide care for a family member because of a physical or mental illness, injury, pregnancy, childbirth, and/or adoption; to accompany or provide transportation for a family member for medical, dental, or optical examination or treatment; and after the death of a family member (to make funeral arrangements or attend the funeral).

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

Under the FMLA, you are entitled to up to 12 workweeks of unpaid leave during any 12-month period. Under certain conditions, you may use the 12 weeks of FMLA leave intermittently. You may choose to substitute any annual or sick leave you have for unpaid leave under the FMLA subject to the rules for using the paid leave. You can use Family and Medical leave for: the birth of a child; placement of a son or daughter with you for adoption or foster care; care of your spouse, son, daughter, or parent with a serious health condition; and your own serious health condition that makes you unable to perform the duties of your position.

Workplace Safety

DFAS is committed to providing a safe workplace for our employees and visitors. We work closely with employees to maintain a workplace that is free from violence, harassment, intimidation, and other disruptive behavior.
